Split, Croatia (Alps and the Sea)
Driving through the Alps is probably one of the incredible mountain regions you will ever see (besides maybe the Himalayas, we'll see). The Croatian coast is also spectacular

Split, Croatia (Croatian Flag overlooking the city)

Split, Croatia (Panoramic)
We hiked to the top of the Park and there is a full panoramic view of Split and near by islands.

Split, Croatia (rental scooter)
We bought kids scooters, and my wheel blew out after the 1st day from jumping too many curbs. The second day we rented a gas scooter($10) and I drove it all over the place. After about an hour of driving it through the park and going off-roading through the trees I was pulled over by the police. We gave them our passports and we couldn't understand what they were saying so they got frustrated and just escorted us out. We then decided to sneak into the Zoo.

Split, Croatia (along the coast)
This vacation in split was extremely fun and relaxing.

Koper, Slovenia (Castle)
We stopped at the old vineyards just outside of Koper. This small castle-church was settled in the middle of a very mountainous region of Slovenia and as you walk inside the interior is lined with amazing fresco paintings and the stories of the bible.

2/28/2010

Koper, Slovenia (Adriatic sea)
After you weave your way through the city, you find yourself at the waterfront. The Palm trees, parks, and sailboats are beautiful along the water and the land behind you rolls into the hills.

2/28/2010

Koper, Slovenia (Old city streets)
Walking through the citie's maze like structure you see worn down street and buildings.

Trieste, Italy (Bus stop)
You often find the most stories from getting lost, sneaking into private property or being a little wild sometimes.

Trieste, Italy (Castle Miramare)
A spectacular castle built for the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilion of the Haspsburg Empire and his wife Charlotte. Before the castle was completed, Maximilion became the Emperor of Mexico only to be brutally executed. He never saw the completed castle, and Charlotte went mentally insane.

2/28/2010

Trieste, Italy (Adriatic sea)
A gorgeous waterfront looking out into the Adriatic sea. It might be nice to settle down in Italy someday.

2/27/2010

Trieste, Italy (San Sabba Concentration Camp)
A truly eye opening experience. You may not fully understand the realization of the Holocaust until you visit a concentration camp such as this one. Located in the middle of the city, thousands of Jewish civilians and political activists were sent here to be detained, tortured, transported and extinguished. 6 million Jewish deaths during the Holocaust.

2/27/2010

Trieste, Italy (City panoramic)
Zac
how do I get rid of the hazyness and glare in the pictures?

2/27/2010

Trieste, Italy
The ocean is always so quiet and calming

2/26/2010

Trieste, Italy (Castle San Giusto)
Overlooking the city, San Guisto was the main military port protecting Trieste's ports from invasion (not Aliens).

2/26/2010

Trieste, Italy (Canals to the Adriatic sea)
Study-abroad excursion to Trieste, Italy was an amazing and fun filled weekend. A quiet, peaceful, and inviting city that has a colorful history and many hidden characteristics.

Vienna, Austria (Danube Island trail)
Bike ride out on the Danube river trails. I'm told they extend all the way to Bratislava or further. We might just have to see about that.

2/23/2010

Vienna, Austria (Danube Island Trail)
I ran home after class so I could go play in the sun! Many Austrians may still seem to be unhappy, yet I had the biggest smile all day!

2/23/2010

Vienna, Austria (Park excursion)
Signs of spring are in the air. A refreshing glimpse of the real Vienna coming out of hibernation.

2/19/2010

Bratislava, Slovakia (old and the new)
The Presidential building and a walk through the streets of Bratislava. The older parts mostly consist of small alleys with cobblestone streets, while the New parts are paved with modern architecture.

2/19/2010

Bratislava, Slovakia (Bridge: Nový Most)
Cold, wet and misty. Many remnants from the socialist past.

2/19/2010

Bratislava, Slovakia
A downsized version of Vienna. The pastries and hot chocolate are amazing, especially on a cold rainy day. A beautiful city which incorporates both the old and the new. Bratislava which was slowed by socialism is making a progressive recovery, it would be interesting to see it again in 20 years.

2/16/2010

Vienna, Austria (Imperial Palace)
Ball dancing is a contact sport. Ball dancing involves hundreds Austrian packed into a palace, running in unorganized circles, to classical music. If your looking to become a professional ballroom dancer, Vienna is the place to learn

Rome, Italy (St.Peters Cathedral)
The most beautiful Cathedral I have ever seen, just after it snowed the sun came out giving St. Peters an amazing silhouette. My shoes and socks were soaking wet, but the the experience was once in a lifetime!

Rome, Italy (Colosseum)
Early morning Tour of the Colosseum. Don't get the Audio Tour especially at 9 in the morning, it will probably put you to sleep. Pizza was amazing in Rome, I had it for every single meal!
2/13/2010

Rome, Italy
Stadio Olimpico

Rome, Italy (Football match)
#3 AS Roma vs. #5 Palermo
Roma Defeats Palermo 4-1: Typical Italian football, relentless attacks by Roma Broke down the Palermo Defense Early in the 1st Half. Word of advice: If your not a Roma fan in the Olympic stadium, you might get stabbed or murdered.. no joke

"If playing AS Roma then be aware that the fans can get very aggressive and start attacking visiting supporters. On my first visit many got attacked outside and we were even treated to a baton charge by the police inside the stadium!"

Rome, Italy (Vatican City on the right)
The 1st time in 24 years, that it has snowed in Rome. Chance of a lifetime to see both the Vatican and St. Peters Cathedral covered in snow! Only downfall is that I have giant holes on the top and bottoms of my shoes (hang in there Vans)
2/12/2010

Rome, Italy
Karate

Amazing new additions to my list of places and experiences.

Exploring the city, you don't have to travel far to find an amazing cityscape. A perfect day in Vienna, Austria

1/15/2010

7am: I woke up and told myself it was time to go for a ride. The snowstorm here in Vienna had delayed training.
My list of near casualties:
  • Weather stayed between -6 and -3 degrees Celsius.
  • Accidentally riding on the freeway, not fun.
  • Chain coming off and falling in front of a few cars, probably dangerous.
  • A little blood never hurt so was able to finish another 50k.
  • Snowing and a 12 kilometer climb to the top of Grinsing on a slippery cobblestone road.
  • View from the top overlooking the city made everything worth it!!
  • Bombing the hill afterward new pr mph (road towards bottom was dry/no cobblestone)
1/14/2010

Atop the hills of Vienna and between the small village of Grinsing stands a lonely church, and a spectacular view of the city (when its not covered in a cloud). Will return to capture the cityscape!

School began Monday, here are a few shots that I see on my daily walk to school. You take the U-bahn from Landesstraβe to Friedensbrücke then take the 5 or 33 car on the straβenbahn. Travel 2 stops then my school is just around the corner.

Prost (Cheers)- To old friends at home who I will never forget. To new friends who have become so much. To a new day and new ambitions. To great people, beautiful scenery, love, and happiness.

If being a tourist is uncool then I am a huge loser. We traveled around the city of Vienna all day exploring the incredible architecture and museums! Apparently the only cool things that I saw (hence the Photo) were a fire hydrant and a bike and if that's not convincing enough that Vienna is beautiful, then you have yourself a problem. So much to see, so little time, I wonder where I will end up next.

1/7/2010

Arriving in Vienna a day early I was able to go out and do a little exploring on my own. I didn't know where I was heading or what I was looking for so I just decided to get on the 1st street car I saw. I was able to see so much as I wandered aimlessly around for about 3 hours in the snow until I decided to turn back. Its an enormous yet beautiful city with so much to see!

Thursday, January 7, 2010

So long everyone, I love and miss you all!
I will do my best to keep up to date on the explorations I have throughout my abroad experience.

Exhaustion after 20 hours of travel across the world. Portland, Oregon to Calgary, Canada to Frankfurt, Germany to Vienna, Austria. It feel great to finally begin to settle back in.
